Lansing, Norman

Ute Mountain Ute artist Norman Lansing was born in 1950 in Towaoc, Colorado. His formal education included the study of art at both Fort Lewis College in Durango and Haskell Junior College. In addition to his art, Norman enjoys time with his family. Norman's intent with his art is to share and express the gift that has been given to him, and to touch those who can understand the spiritual message that flows through him and his art.

"As a professional artist, I work in all media. I am best known for etchings on ceramic vases. Most of the subject matter in my art centers in the balance between man, animal, earth and the spirits of all living entities needed to form a balanced universe. Some of my images are of traditional ute designs, but I never use sacred ceremonial design or color. I am inspired by the rising and setting of the sun and by all the beauty that surrounds me. One has only to open one's eye and look about with appreciation."

We carry Norman's very fine and detailed etching on previously-made pottery, as well as his etchings on clayboard.

Scraffito is the delicate incising or carving of a design on to the surface of clay. Norman does his unique, one of a kind, original works in clay. He considers the clay to be his canvas. Norman signs and titles all of his carved pottery on the bottom of the vessel. Layers of detail, layers of carving and layers of imagination. This is the style of artist Norman Lansing. The flowing design on the pot leads the viewer from one scene in to the next. Figurative, abstract, traditional, the imagery is all connected.
