Navajo Baskets
NAVAJO WEDDING BASKETS are woven by both the Navajo and Paiute weavers of the Southwest, and are made entirely out of sumac and decorated with natural or aniline dyes. At a Navajo marriage, a new basket is required to serve traditional corn meal mush to the wedding couple, then it is passed around for the guests. Basket making proceeded pottery making, and is a craft that is not as active today. It is a time consuming craft. But, Navajo baskets are still used by the people today for ceremony, and are highly collectible.
Navajo wedding basket by Joaquin Phillps- Measuring 15 inches in diameter. The design is thought to depict the beginning of life, clouds and mountains in the inner and outer worlds.
Woven from willow, sumac and devil's claw, these ceremonial baskets are still used by the Navajo people today for weddings. They are woven to hold sacred corn meal porridge. This basket measures 16 inches in diameter.

The making of a basket involves many seasons, harvesting, peeling, drying, dying and weaving. This ceremonial basket is generally used for weddings and births. This extremely unusual handwoven Navajo basket features two Yei figures surrounding a typical "wedding basket" or ceremonial basket design. The outside border is a simple geometric triangle design in black, while the central design is red and black. This piece features intricate pictorial details and measures a whopping 26" in diameter.
