Raised Outline Weavings
Lena Begay Curtis has been actively weaving since the 1970's. Lena and her half-brother, Larry Yazzie, are credited as innovators in the early 1990's of the Blue Canyon style an asymmetrical composition in the Raised Outline technique. Featured is an excellent example of just such a weaving. Measuring 3 feet by 5 feet, woven in wonderful shades of blues and burgundy. Each side is different in it's intensity and brilliance of color. An effect that is achieved with the four warp threads that are necessary in a Raised Outline weaving.
"Storm Raised Outline Four in One"- Raised outline weaving has a four in one, the four Storms are woven in vegetal and aniline pastel colors of peach, cream, turquoise, sage, plum and rose. Raised Outline rugs require extra weft threads, extra time and extra talent. Each side of the weaving has a different look, one is brighter in color and the other is more muted and appears not to be in focus. Susie Begay was born in 1937 in the Blue Canyon area, and has been actively weaving since the 1950's. Susie has created this lovely example of this exceptional weaving technique.
