Toh-Atin carries many wonderful pieces by such well-known artists as David Caricato, Robert Rivera and Nancy Young, as well as fetishes, sandpaintings, miniature katsinas, beadwork, cradleboards, Native American flutes and Yupik (Eskimo) art from Alaska. Off the northwest coast of ALASKA, 32 miles from Siberia, lies St. Lawrence Island, where 1,000 Siberian Yupik Eskimos live in two villages. During a few short weeks in the spring and fall, they are legally allowed to hunt walrus and whales for subsistence. During the winter the people spend most of their time indoors, carving ivory and whalebone to generate income. These people live much the same life as their ancestors, and their art has played an important part in allowing them to maintain their culture and lifestyle.

Etching is a printing technique in which a metal plate is covered with an acid-resistant material, then an image is created with a needle. The exposed metal is eaten away in an acid bath, creating depressed lines that are inked for printing.

We have a number of Native American flutes by Navajo artist, Travis Jensen. Each one is keyed to a particular scale.

We carry handmade sandstone furniture by Tiza of Arizona. The tops of these tables are sandstone, the legs are of wood or metal.

A serigraph is a printing technique that forces ink directly onto a piece of paper through a stencil creating an image on a screen of silk or other fine fabric with an impermeable substance. Its color areas are of paint rather than printing ink. Jan Thompson's work is the art of serigraphy, sometimes known as silkscreen.

We have the work of some of the most accomplished Navajo silversmiths. Harry Morgan , in particular, has long been known for his fine craftsmanship and artistic designs in sterling silver.

We carry carvings of many types of wood. Lathe-turned bowls may be found under Original Art by Stephen Lewis . Katsinas are hand-carved from cottonwood root.

Rhino Carving, CRBF-381

Rhino carved from pipe stone measures 2 1/4 inches long. Though not a traditional fetish animal, some carvers are create all sorts of animal figures.

Creatures of the night. Featured is a fabulous carving by Zuni artist Lewis Mallie. Lewis is known for his work in antler. In this intricate piece you can see the antler shape. Two bats with wings spread come up from the base that has a moth on it.

Rivera Gourd Art, OARR7-22

"Tablita Lady"- by gourd artist Robert Rivera of New Mexico. The headdress has a night sky with stars in it, the figure is decorated with turquoise, shells, feathers and leather. The body is the natural form of the gourd and left in the dried fruit color. She measures 11 3/4 inches tall.

Turtle Fetish, CMRB8-13

Traditionally used as a medicine bag, given to babies at birth. The turtle was given to the girls, and symbolized long life. This beaded fetish is decorated with green and bronze beads. Measures 3 1/2 inches long.

Turtle Fetish- Made of leather and blue and white beads. Traditionally used as a gift for newborn children. Usually a turtle was given to girls, and a lizard was given to boys.
