Lapis lazuli

Lapis has been used as a gemstone as far back as 5,000 B.C. and was highly prized by the Egyptian pharoahs. The finest lapis is found in Afghanistan, but is also mined in Russia, Siberia, Angola, Pakistan, Angola, Canada, California and Colorado. The Romans believed lapis was a powerful aphrodisiac, and it was once believed it had powerful medicinal qualities. During the Renaissance, it was finely ground, its impurities removed and used for the costly, but beautiful blue pigment, ultramarine.
