Black marble snake is carved on the top with a zig zag pattern and it has turquoise inlaid eyes. The snake symbolized life, death and rebirth or transformation. The carving on the back of this snake represents lightning and the bringing of rain.

Resourceful, innovative and creative are words that aptly describe the North American, native peoples. The sculpture pictured is a mixed media piece, depicting a seal hunt. The seal is fossil ivory, the hunter is fossil bone, and the stand is fossilized sled runner. All these materials were found on the shores of the island of St. Lawrence, Alaska. This small sculpture has a lot of character.
